Serves: 10

Hands On Time: 30 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour and 15 minutes

2 cups sugar

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup hot double-strength brewed coffee

4 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1/2 cup sour cream, at room temperature

2 large eggs, at room temperature

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter

1/3 cup sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 pound semisweet chocolate, chopped

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/4 cup double-strength brewed coffee

Freshly whipped cream, for serving

To make the cake: Heat the oven to 325 degrees. Butter and flour two 9-inch cake pans.

In a medium bowl, sift together the sugar, flour, baking soda and salt.

In a second medium bowl, stir together the hot coffee and unsweetened chocolate. Continue to stir until the chocolate has completely melted.

In a large bowl, mix together the oil, sour cream, eggs and vanilla. Stir in the melted chocolate mixture and blend well. Add the flour mixture in three batches, stirring well after each addition. Divide the batter between the prepared pans. Bake until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean, 30 to 40 minutes.

Let the cakes cool in the pans for 15 minutes before flipping the cakes out onto cooling racks to cool completely.

While the cakes are cooling, make the frosting: In a small saucepan, heat the cream, butter, sugar and salt over low heat until butter is melted. Remove from the heat and stir in the semisweet chocolate until melted and smooth. Add the vanilla and coffee and stir to combine.

Let the frosting mixture cool to room temperature; it should take on a spreadable consistency.

Frost the top of one layer of cake, top with a second layer of cake, then frost the top and sides. Serve with whipped cream.
