Naughty and nice: These two Halloween-themed cocktails are scary good

Ashley Twist Cole
The Bad Witch Cocktail

Are you a good witch or a bad witch? This Halloween, you don’t have to choose! Not all Halloween drinks need to be orange, black or have googly gummy eyeballs in them.

The names of the cocktails alone make them worthy of drinking on All Hallow’s Eve. Here are two Halloween-themed cocktails that are perfect for sipping while you wait to answer the door for trick-or-treaters.

Good Witch

We call this the Good Witch because it uses Strega, an Italian herbal liqueur, which means “witch” in Italian.

Considered a digestif, Strega has approximately 70 herbal ingredients and is yellow in color due to the presence of saffron. It’s slightly sweet, semi-viscous and has a bold, complex flavor. In the Good Witch, we pair Strega with a Scotch whisky. Add in some honey simple syrup, fresh lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Get the recipe here.

Bad Witch

The Bad Witch uses the same measurements as the Good Witch, and is basically the opposite drink, with only one shared ingredient — the honey simple syrup. We swap the scotch for bourbon, the Strega for yellow Chartreuse (which is milder and sweeter than Strega) and lemon for lime. Limes are green, and so are bad witches. Don’t worry, nobody will drop a house on you while you drink this. (We hope!)

For a twist, pour the drink into a Collins glass and serve over ice cubes. We call this iteration “Bad Witch on the Patio,” because it’s something that would be nice to sip outside on a sunny afternoon. Get the recipe here.
