Ingredients
4 cups water
1 cup packed dark brown sugar
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter
1 teaspoon kosher salt
3 cinnamon sticks
1 whole nutmeg
5 allspice berries
5 whole cloves
1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise
1 cup dark or amber rum
Instructions
In the bowl of a slow cooker, combine all of the ingredients except for the rum. Cover with the lid and cook on low heat until sugar dissolves and mixture is fragrant, 4 hours. Turn off the heat, stir in the rum, and ladle into mugs or glasses. Serve.
Using your slow cooker to make hot cocktails allows the flavors to more deeply develop, plus it perfumes the entire kitchen with warming spice.
