Tour the South’s historic homes this holiday season

In the bi-weekly content series The New Southern Hospitality, I'll be exploring the old and new traditions of Southern hospitality, what qualities and behaviors make us unique and, of course, tips and ideas on how to be the ultimate hospitable Southern host or hostess.

Letting someone into your home is a gracious act of hospitality. Letting the entire community into your home is an act of charity — often actually for charity. Mark your calendar for some of the best tour of home events around the South this holiday season.

Amelia Island Museum of History Holiday Home Tour
December 1 and 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Discover the beautiful Victorian homes of Amelia Island during the 11th Annual Holiday Home Tour. A local florist or decorator adds some holiday spirit to each home in the historic district of Fernandina beach.

Tour of Homes presented by the Garden Club of St. Augustine
December 3 from 12 to 5 p.m.
This holiday walking tour takes guests through the historic district of St. Augustine. Discover six private historic homes that have been decorated for the holiday season while enjoying holiday refreshments.

Virginia-Highland Tour of Homes
December 2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and December 3 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Known as one of Atlanta’s most charming neighborhoods, Virginia-Highland will be showing off its historic residences and beautiful architecture for the 23rd Annual Virginia-Highland Tour of Homes. Eight different properties are on display this year, including a restored 1916 bungalow with original features and a 1920s English country-style home that is decorated with original artwork.

Grant Park Candlelight Tour of Homes
December 9 and 10 from 6 to 10 p.m.
For the past 30 years, Grant Park has been showing off its unique architectural style during the Grant Park Candlelight Tour of Homes. With new homes and renovations, this neighborhood has also kept its historic charm. Tour 10 different homes in the historic neighborhood during this year's Candlelight Tour of Homes.

Holiday Tour of Homes in Savannah
December 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 1 to 5 p.m.
Savannah is known for its Southern charm and exquisite architecture. Discover what’s behind the doors of the beautiful private residences of Savannah during the Holiday Tour of Homes. Add on the “Inn Tour” to visit five of Savannah’s historic inns that will also be decorated for the holidays.

Madison Holiday Tour of Homes
November 3 through December 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (day tours) and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. (candlelight tours)
General Sherman refused to burn the city of Madison on his March to the Sea because of its beauty and charm. 150 years later, Madison is still known for its antebellum homes and buildings. The architecture that survived the Civil War is on display during Madison’s annual Holiday Tour of Homes. The mansions of Madison will be decorated lavishly for the holidays and visitors can discover them during a daytime tour or by candlelight.

Historic Columbia’s Holiday Tour of Homes

Decorated with natural wreaths and garlands, and citrus and cedar trees, the historic house museums of Columbia will be on display for the holiday season. The Hampton-Preston Mansion, Mann-Simons Cottage and the Robert Mills House will all be open for the holiday tour.

Candlelight Tour of Homes in Camden
December 10 from 3 to 8 p.m.
This year marks the 40th anniversary for the Candlelight Tour of Homes in Camden, South Carolina. Along with a tour of some of Camden’s most elegant homes, the town will be in full swing with holiday festivities.

Christmas in Charleston
Dates and times vary
Charleston is decking the halls for the holiday season and continuing to spread the holiday spirit with a series of holiday traditions that are as old as the city. Take tours of the Heyward Washington House, the Joseph Manigault House and Nathaniel Russell House, or stroll through the city on a holiday walking tour.

December 3 from 2 to 5 p.m.
This beautiful city on the Mississippi river is ready to sparkle for the holidays. The holiday season is full of events but if you want to check out the historic homes of Natchez, take the Library Tour of Homes.

New Orleans Preservation Resource Center’s Holiday Home Home Tour
December 9 and 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Take a tour of seven private residences in New Orleans’ Garden District. This festive tour includes some of the city’s best architecture along with performances from local musicians.

Holidays at Historic Homes in Nashville
Dates and times vary
During the holiday season, some of Nashville’s most historic residences will be available to tour. Belmont Mansion, Belle Meade Plantation and Rock Castle will all be festively decorated and open for visitors throughout the holiday season.

60th Annual Holiday Home Tour and Market in Fredricksburg
December 2 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Christmas will be on display at seven homes in and around Fredricksburg. A self-guided tour comes complete with a tour map and full description of each home.
