slow cooker chicken noodle soup

13 cozy, soul warming soups to bookmark now and serve all winter long

When I was a small child, I remember watching the iconic Campbell's tomato soup commercial in which a little snow man was transformed back into a small child after have one spoonful of thick soup. Besides being just a very good commercial, Campbell's was on to something — nothing warms you up or tastes quite as good as a hot bowl of soup on a cold day.

Whether you like to keep it classic with a chicken noodle or get a little more adventurous, these 13 recipes will leave you cozy and satisfied all winter long.

Slow Cooker Chicken Noodle Soup
If you’re looking to make chicken noodle soup in a slow cooker, this recipe offers up the best way to build lots of flavor. Yes, you’ll need to pull out the skillet to brown the chicken and saute aromatics, but you’ll be rewarded with a rich stock and tender veggies. We like to use orzo pasta in this dish because it scoops up nicely into your spoon. (That said, you can certainly substitute your preferred pasta.) This soup will cook completely in 5 to 6 hours on low, but it’ll keep just fine on the warm setting if you need to allow an extra couple of hours to get home from work.

Far from the canned version, this velvety-smooth recipe requires a little bit more effort than opening up a couple of Campbell's. Sweet onion, canned San Marzano tomatoes and a copious amount of garlic help to make this one soup you will reach for again and again. If you don't want your soup creamy, feel free to swap in vegetable or chicken stock for the milk. And don't forget, of course, to serve this meal hot with a side of grilled cheese!

Red Lentil and Green Collard Soup

There is no other leafy green that is quite as Southern as the collard. Normally these delicious vegetables are served braised with smoked turkey or ham for big holiday celebrations. However, in this recipe, collards are paired with red lentils to give you a soup that is sure to stick to your bones. In addition to being absolutely delicious, this soup is also completely vegetarian.

She crab soup is a creamy and iconic Low Country bisque that is flavored with sherry and the roe of female crabs. Because crab roe is seasonal and often difficult to find, claw crab meat offers the most pronounced crab flavor at a great value. To give the soup even deeper crab flavor and a thick, luscious body, try blending half of the crab into the soup. Stirring in the remaining crab at the end brings texture and briny brightness.

We called this one a Southern vegetable soup because it has all of our favorites in it. Collard greens, fresh cabbage, tomatoes, carrots and black-eyed peas are married together in a rich herby broth to give you quite possibly one of the best soups there is. If you're a little more adventurous and want a dash of umami, try topping your soup off with a bit of shaved Parmesan or Pecorino Romano cheese.

Light Fish and Potato Soup
This recipe comes to us courtesy of Chef Anne Quatrano and calls for just about any seafood — snapper, grouper, shrimp or shellfish — that you can get your hands on. Pair this savory meal-in-a-bowl with a crusty baguette and a green salad and dinner is done. For another burst of flavor, put a crouton on top of each dish and top it with a garlic aioli.

Baked potato soup is a gift from the heavens above. This recipe, similar to regular loaded baked potatoes, calls for the use of russet potatoes. Add in chicken stock, cheddar cheese, bacon and scallions for a thick, creamy soup? I'll have two bowls please.
